Vision

The Department of Biochemistry aims to be an academic entity that trains graduates with integrity. The Department of Biochemistry conducts valuable research, provides academic services to guide society, serves as a national and international academic reference, and enhances community quality of life.

Mission of the Department

  • Train graduates with knowledge and skills that meet international standards and possess desirable social attributes. 
  • Provide education in biochemistry and related sciences, both theoretical and practical, to medical students, graduate students, nursing students, and medical personnel under a quality assurance system. 
  • Conduct research and create new knowledge to achieve international standards. 
  • Provide academic services and knowledge to the public for societal and national development. 
  • Preserve and promote art and culture.

Departmental Support Mission

        The Department of Biochemistry conducts core missions in teaching, research, academic services, and cultural preservation. It offers education to undergraduate medical students in regular and international programs (CUMEDi), graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine, and the Graduate School of Chulalongkorn University, as well as nursing students from the Srisavarindira Thai Red Cross Institute of Nursing. The department emphasizes self-directed learning alongside classroom learning, both theoretical and practical, with close guidance for students. 

         The Department of Biochemistry is responsible for developing and managing the MSc/PhD programs in Medical Biochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. These programs have been continuously providing education at an international standard for 20 years, producing over 80 graduates. Currently, there are 20 MSc and 10 PhD students enrolled who will contribute significantly to national development in the future. 

Professional Service 

        Faculty members from the Department of Biochemistry regularly participate in patient care at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society, including general clinics, liver disease clinics, kidney disease clinics, Parkinson’s disease clinics, cancer clinics, and orthopedics clinics. 

        The Department of Biochemistry prioritizes research with consistent publications in international academic journals. The department’s research is a prominent academic reference nationally and internationally. Most faculty members have research published in Tier 1 and Quartile 1 international journals, with an average of 5 publications per person per year. Faculty members have also received various prestigious awards, including outstanding thesis awards, excellent biochemist and molecular biologist awards, outstanding researcher awards, invention and innovation awards, senior research fellowships, and distinguished alumni awards from various institutions across the country. 

        Furthermore, research has been translated into medical innovations, such as the COVID-19 screening kit (COVID-19 SCAN), HydroZitLa concentrated extract drink from butterfly pea and banana core, and point-of-care testing for hepatitis B.
